A laboratory should use control materials that are as similar as possible to patient samples and which also allow for comparison between different methods and instruments where the assigned values have been obtained from independent laboratories.

ISO 15189 endorses the use of independent third party control materials in medical laboratories and states that; “The laboratory shall use quality control materials that react to the examining system in a manner as close as possible to patient samples" and “Use of independent third party control materials should be considered, either instead of, or in addition to, any control materials supplied by the reagent or instrument manufacturer”. SEROs mission has always been to improve patient care by contributing to analyses that give reliable results that are comparable from day to day, and between laboratories.
